Welcome, carolers. (Scrooges invited, not obligated!) Let’s go wassailing among some evergreens and uncover which states had the most Christmas spirit this year. Yep, it’s time for our 5th annual report on Christmas cheer in America.
In this report, we rank all 50 states for Christmas cheer by factors including evergreen farm numbers, charitable giving, and how often residents online shop, stream, and tweet Christmas content. This year’s report comes with a stocking stuffer: a new survey on America’s holiday spirits in 2022.

What America thinks about Christmas in 2022
Interesting findings
- For the second year in a row, New Hampshire ranks #1 for the most Christmas spirit.
- Wisconsin is the second most-spirited state this year. In 2021, it ranked #16.
- Maine ranked #2 last year, but it fell to #18 this year.
- Washington, DC, ranked in last place for the third year in a row.
- Vermont has the most Christmas farms per capita in the United States—and has maintained that standing for the past four years.
- The state with the second highest number of farms per capita is Oregon.
- According to the IRS, Californians give more tax-deductible charitable contributions than residents of any other state.
- Texas ranks #2 and New York ranks #3 for tax-deductible charitable giving.
- Vermont ranks first for the most tweets about Christmas. Delaware ranks second.
Methodology
To determine which states have the most Christmas spirit, we compiled 10 data metrics in two main categories: (1) Christmas-themed online activity within the last 12 months and (2) Christmas-related cultural markers. We custom-weighted each metric at the percentages below to assign final rankings:
- Christmas-themed online activity, weighted at 78.5% of the total ranking
- Google searches for two key terms, weighted at 29% (14.5% each)
- “Christmas movies”
- “Gingerbread houses”
- Google Shopping trends for four key terms, weighted at 28% (7% each)
- “Wrapping paper”
- “Christmas cards”
- “Christmas ornaments”
- “Elf on a Shelf”
- Christmas music streaming, weighted at 14.5%
- Tweets about Christmas during the month of December 2021, weighted at 7%
- Google searches for two key terms, weighted at 29% (14.5% each)
- Christmas-related cultural markers, weighted at 21.5% of the total ranking
- Number of Christmas tree farms per capita, weighted at 7%
- Charitable giving in the last documented tax year, weighted at 14.5%
We also used Pollfish, a marketing research software tool, to survey 1,000 Americans on their attitudes and habits around celebrating Christmas this season. We gathered this data in September 2022.
